Procrastination is not Laziness by Kim Keown and Jayne Nowek

If not then when? Wait what? (I procrastinated on editing this yesterday, so here it is today...) According to a 2019 article in the New York Times by Charlotte Leiberman,  Why You Procrastinate " Etymologically, “procrastination” is derived from the Latin verb  procrastinare  — to put off until tomorrow. But it’s more than just voluntarily delaying. Procrastination is also derived from the ancient Greek word  akrasia —  doing something against our better judgment." She points out that most people procrastinate by doing tasks that require a lot of focus. I for one have cleaned out the "junk draw" in my kitchen rather than do the art work for a deadline. As my Aunt Bev says, "everybody has a junk draw," so don't pretend.  However, if laziness is not the reason, then laziness is just the excuse. Lets dig in and see if we can find ways to procrastinate less.  The 5 minute technique according to  JUSTIN BARISO  is a good way to get yourself ...

Behind the mirage. When does more is better... become never enough... and then too much to sustain life?

by Kim Keown Trash is not in a privileged back yard. It is sent far away for impoverished brown bodies to sort as they are poisoned by its toxicity  (Miller) . Those with, have been in a banal safe space. Those designated by those in power to be without are poisoned by industries that bring products aspired to while being used as free or cheap labor. With an economy in unsustainable growth, government solutions are more of the same exploitive models. People are addicted to devices. The digital world, as I remember, was originally sold to us as a more sustainable “paperless” solution. In actuality or digital devises use energy that creates carbon  (George and Dierdre) , rely on finite resources, and then create massive amounts of trash. We are steam rolling toward a mass extinction of humanity  (Braidotti)  and taking many species with us. Polarity in our politics due to propaganda in our media and governments is preventing us coming together for viable solutions. Mir...

The Truth

The Truth  by Jayne Nowek edited by Hazel James    Did you know that the truth is up for grabs? Do you know who is trying to co-opt and brand truth?   Let’s just say this isn’t the first thing he’s made an attempt at grabbing. This time with an unwanted advancement on social media platforms, with his own, called TRUTH SOCIAL.    How is TRUTH continually being contested? Is there more than one TRUTH? Can they still be held as self evident? Were they ever? (That would explain a lot) Maybe TRUTH is a Spectrum? We like that word nowadays, But so we still like TRUTH? Can we handle it?    In an attempt to clear this up for our viewers, my team and I launched a series of investigations to find out the TRUTH for you all and made a shocking discovery…. Folks, it pains me to delivery this news…  It turns out our worst fears have come true. The truth is now bullshit. Our next investigation begins as we search for a way to truly describe what once w...

Solutions to climate change are repeating mistakes in new models

The problem with lithium batteries Presently, our total and complete dependence on information and communications technology (smartphones, tablets, lap tops, smartwatches etc…) increases an already colossal market for mined resources. It’s nearly impossible to name anything around you that did not come from a mine; from the walls in your house to the fertilizer in your garden.  Lithium batteries produced for our devices which are constantly being “improved” and updated, rendering previous ones obsolete. This not only further increases the market for mined materials but constantly uses energy and depletes non-renewable resources.  “Going Green” is not as easy as it seems. Ironically, the attempt to transition from the massive use of fossil fuels to alternative energy for example, the mining of minerals like cobalt increases for the production of lithium batteries for electric cars  (Campbell) not only further damages the environment and vital ecosystems but als...

Heaps of Trash - not in our back yards

Image
Photo: Hermes Rivera Well some of us have a few old cars. Some of us save piles of "recycling" we swear we will need to use. But did you know that our trash is literally killing people in other countries? Check out this article to find out how and pictures of the mountainous piles.  Our plastic trash has until very recently been shipped to other countries, less than 9% able to actually be recycled  ( Loria ) . (So maybe those among us who want to save and reuse it are onto something?)  Photo by  John Cameron   on  Unsplash Our toxic electronic waste is being sent to countries with less strict regulations or enforcement. China and then the US produce the highest amounts of e-waste in “unsustainable” amounts  ( Arora and Farge ) . It creates pollution and releases chemicals into the environment  ( Miller ) . Recently, even the moon was hit by a piece of space “debris” abandoned after a space mission  ( Howell ) . It is figured to have created ...

The harbinger of spring seems to be a bird that doesn't fly south... always or any more?

Feb 28 th , 2022 About a month ago, a warm January day after a big snow – which was melting on the field, I saw a very large flock of robins. I think it was almost 50 full. I have seen robins in winter before, and one even clearly asked me for food after a freezing snow. But I have never seen so many. I just read ( on this blog ) that they are more nomadic than migratory - they follow the food, and they do flock up in winter for safety and to keep each other posted as to where the food is. We had 2 melts this January and apparently this is when worms and slugs can be found.   The interesting thing is though, today I just saw a big male. He flew away and came back with 2 juvenile robins and guarded them as they drank from melted snow on our black deck. I snapped a few pictures before they flew away. I did not get close so as not to scare them off.  February 28 th  seems very early for this behavior. They are already nesting. According to the same  blog post , if ...
